Happy Day, George Washington!

So continues our calendar run of Founder and President Birthdays.

“I heard the bullets whistle, Washington proclaimed, “and, believe me, there is something charming in the sound.”

The cherry tree story may be fake news. Here is a link to a post from 2018 where I discuss some of Washington’s flaws: A Continuing Tea Party.

Post Script: I love my school. Washington and Lee University kept its name this year after a Board of Trustees vote, which is the right and proper result in my view. Not because everyone associated with the school’s history (or present … or future) should be considered right and proper in all respects but because history is not something we shrink from. Slavery is the original American Sin and we aren’t going to get past it by pretending it didn’t happen.
