When my Father was in school at West Virginia University, he made extra cash working mines operated by his family in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. I was born when he was 19. There’s a photo of him – a kid, really – grinning like a future trial lawyer covered in soot outside of his apartment. I need to find that photo.
Each and every one of us is handed nothing. Dignity and respect are cobbled together with hard work and perseverance. But we don’t do it alone. Sometimes, we rely on family and friends. For the big, scary things – we rely on professionals to help navigate the way. That’s the kind of lawyer my Dad was – and the kind I try to be.

]]> Like Punxatawney Phil, there comes a time to stick one’s head out to figure out when it’s time to come above ground. This is that week for me. Time to get the road cases out of the closet and get back down the road.

The road has always been a part of my law practice. For two generations, the formula hasn’t changed. Take cases anywhere that serious needs of a client take you. I have traveled to and litigated cases in just about every courthouse in Florida. I’ve traveled to most of the states when claims or evidence call me there to represent clients in those jurisdictions. 

Now that jury trials are being rescheduled (for now and fingers crossed), it is time to restart in earnest. The most important things in civil litigation cannot happen by Zoom. Without the threat of a verdict, plaintiffs lose a lot of leverage. I won’t let my clients lose the value of that leverage when making a decision about settling their case.

And so as leverage makes a comeback, I am going to Insta and Livestream my way South where I’ll dig through my pre-pandemic work life. Join me if you can and share your own restart experiences.
